Deputy First Minister endorses....

.......new freight efficiency programme for Wales

The new Freight Best Practice programme for Wales was endorsed last week (16 November) by the Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones during his visit to truck operator Gwynedd Shipping Group, Holyhead.

Launched in Cardiff on 6 November and sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government, the programme provides a range of free advice and support material designed to help Welsh freight operators reduce emissions and improve efficiency. The Deputy First Minister’s visit to Gwynedd Shipping’s Holyhead based 800 strong trailer operation coincided with a one day on site efficiency advice audit being conducted by experts from the Freight Best Practice programme.

Commenting on the programme, Mr Jones said ‘Freight logistics account for around 6 per cent of employment in Wales, and contribute around £2.5 billion to the Welsh economy - ensuring effective supply chains for manufacturers, farmers and retailers. Our support for this programme demonstrates our commitment to ensuring freight operators have the correct tools and information to improve their operational and environmental performance.' '

The draft strategy highlights the challenges faced and sets out options for responding to them. It looks at the specific needs of the industry in Wales, and considers how to promote an efficient, effective and environmentally sustainable freight transport system - one that supports the strong economy the Welsh Assembly Government seeks to promote in our ‘One Wales’ programme.'

Mark Cunnew Managing Director for Gwynedd Shipping Group said ‘We are absolutely delighted to be spearheading the launch of Freight Best Practice for Wales. The programme’s thorough audit process will help us to improve our performance whilst reducing our Carbon output’

Freight Best Practice for Wales provides FREE operational efficiency advice to Welsh freight operators in the form of best practice guidance and support material aimed at cutting fuel use and CO2 emissions. The programme covers five key areas - Saving Fuel, Developing Skills, Equipment and Systems, Operational Efficiency and Performance Management. Funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, and delivered by Faber Maunsell Limited, Freight Best Practice for Wales builds on the success of the Department for Transport sponsored programme for England
