Freight Best Practice 2009 Student of the Y...

......Winner

The winner of this year's Freight Best Practice 'Student of the Year' competition sponsored by AECOM is Dean Bernard who is studying for an MSc in Logistics at Birmingham City University. Participants were asked to write an essay of no more than 2,500 words on 'The Carbon Challenge - what measures should the logistics industry be taking to reduce its carbon footprint?'

Dean's essay was of an exceptional standard with the main recommendation urging the logistics industry to promote the belief that adopting a greener way of operating does not necessarily increase costs, erode profit or diminish efficiency. Dean explained that for this misconception to change, education is required through vocational training at every level of the logistics sector.

Dean said 'I am delighted to be named the 2009 Freight Best Practice Student of the Year. Prior to undertaking an MSc in logistics I have had various industry related roles from van driver through to senior management and like most people who have been involved in the sector, I have gained a real passion for the industry. I am really looking forward to my placement opportunity within the Freight Best Practice team which I am sure will be very rewarding and importantly it will give me a great footing for my future career within the industry.'

The competition was once again sponsored by award winning transport consultancy AECOM and Dean will receive a prize of £500 and a trophy which will be presented at the CILT's Logistics Research Network Conference in September. In addition to this, Dean has also won a Student Placement working with the Freight Best Practice team either at the Department for Transport or within AECOM.
