Freight Best Practice Publish Tesco....

....Carbon Efficiency Case Study

The Freight Best Practice programme has published a new FREE case study entitled 'Tesco Sets the Pace on Low Carbon and Efficiency' which highlights the measures taken by Tesco in improving efficiency and reducing carbon emissions from its distribution operation.

The measures which gained Tesco an award at a prestigious transport event in 2008, resulted in a 10.2% reduction on their carbon footprint in 2007 and means they are well on course to achieve their goal of a 50% reduction by 2011.

Measures which are highlighted in this case study include:

Utilising Existing Assets - Tesco updated its transport and warehousing systems to ensure that they were working in harmony and maximising trailer fill

Alternatives to Road - Approximately 3.5 million road miles have been removed by the use of trains for trunking goods to Scotland, and also by the use of a barge on the Manchester Ship Canal to take imported wine to a bottling plant

Reducing Road Miles - This has been achieved through increasing the use of double deck trailers, maximising back-loading opportunities and introducing larger distribution centres which reduces the trunking operation

The Tesco Sets the Pace on Low Carbon and Efficiency case study is completely free of charge and can be obtained by calling the Freight Best Practice Hotline on downloaded by clicking here
