Freight Best Practice Scotland - a free advice scheme aimed at improving the efficiency of the Scottish freight industry by promoting operational efficiency and CO2 reductions within road, rail and waterways - was launched  on Friday 7th November by the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change, Stewart Stevenson at the Transport News Scottish Rewards 2009 in Glasgow.

Speaking at the launch, Stewart Stevenson said 'This Government is committed to an 80% reduction in emissions by 2050, the most ambitious statutory target anywhere in the world. Transport, and the freight industry in particular, have an important role to play in this effort. This £500,000 investment will ensure Scottish hauliers have access to the latest industry best practice, allowing them to play their part in tackling climate change as well as saving money for their business.'

Freight Best Practice Scotland covers five key areas; Saving Fuel, Developing Skills, Equipment and Systems, Performance Management and Multi-modal. The programme will provide free operational efficiency advice to Scottish freight operators in the form of best practice guidance and support material aimed at cutting fuel use and emissions.

The range of free resources now available to Scottish operators include:

  • Guides explaining best practice
  • Case Studies showing how operators have benefited
  • Information and training DVDs
  • Pocket Guides for drivers
  • Support software and interactive tools
  • Benchmarking surveys for a range of sectors
  • Research reports on transport and logistics developments
  • E-news updates
